About the Speakers

Jonathan M. Samet is a pulmonary physician and epidemiologist, and former dean, Colorado School of Public Health. He is a veteran of the “secondhand smoke wars” and other contretemps with critics of public health science. He testified as an expert witness in major lawsuits against the tobacco industry, including those brought by the State of Minnesota and the US Department of Justice. His research focuses on the health risks of inhaled pollutants—particles and ozone in outdoor air and indoor pollutants including secondhand smoke and radon. He has been editor and author of several Reports of the Surgeon General on Smoking and Health. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Lisa Bero, PhD, is a leader in evidence synthesis, meta-research and study of commercial determinants of health, focusing on tobacco control, pharmaceutical policy, and public health. She has pioneered the utilization of internal industry documents and transparency databases to understand corporate tactics and motives for influencing research evidence. She is internationally recognized for her work on evidence synthesis, bias, conflicts of interest and use of evidence in decisions as shown by media coverage, speaking invitations and service on national and international committees, such as US National Academies of Science Committees, the World Health Organization Essential Medicines and guideline committees.
